The bronze busts, called Desert Quartet, were made by Dame Elisabeth Frink and may be taken down if an application by The Avon Group is approved.

The Worthing-based developer commissioned the busts but has now applied for them to be removed and replaced with statues of two horses and two dogs by sculptor Ben Vichuda.

When the Desert Quartet was unveiled in 1991, the heads were immediately met with mixed views.

At the moment, it is unclear what will happen to them if they are removed.
