Ofsted praises ‘welcoming’ Rustington school

It is the same result the school achieved from its last inspection in January, 2011.

The school achieved ‘good’ in all four categories and, among other positives, teaching was praised as ‘good’ and sometimes ‘outstanding’.

Headteacher William Molloy said: “We are all thrilled that the work we do at Georgian Gardens has been recognised and praised by Ofsted. I am extremely proud of the judgements relating to the behaviour of our children, the good and at times outstanding teaching and the memorable learning experiences we provide.”

In its report, Ofsted said children started at reception with below average skills for their age but made good progress because the curriculum was ‘adapted to cater for the particular needs of the year group’.

In a summary of its key findings, Ofsted said staff and pupils were ‘respectful and courteous towards each other’ and the headteacher had ‘a clear vision for the school’.

Teachers and governors were also praised.

The report added: “The effective governing body and staff share the vision and this contributes to the success of pupils in this improving school. The headteacher ensures senior leaders have every opportunity to develop their leadership skills. They work together, plan carefully and regularly review progress against set goals.”

However, Ofsted pointed to areas which could enable the school to improve further to become ‘outstanding’.

It said teachers do not always give pupils, especially those who are more able, work which is hard enough.

Also, pupils’ progress in writing was not as rapid as it was in reading.

Rosemary Cornish, chairman of governors, said: “I am delighted that Ofsted has acknowledged the good progress and above average standards that our pupils achieve and the excellent contribution they make to the school and wider community.

“The inspectors also recognised the dedication of Mr Molloy, our headteacher, and all the staff and praised the school for being safe and caring. Building on this firm foundation, we will continue to work to ensure each of our pupils is enabled to develop to his or her full potential within a creative and respectful environment.”

Mr Molloy added: “The support from our parents has been overwhelming and this was reflected in the fact that all those who responded to Ofsted’s parent view survey said they would recommend the school to others. We are looking forward to building on our obvious strengths and continuing to provide a good education for all our children.”
