Oil covered birds washed up on West Sussex coast

OIL-covered birds being washed up along the West Sussex coast are not linked with the sinking of the Ice Prince, say authorities.

The Greek-registered cargo vessel sank off Dorset almost a month ago and around 40 of the birds have been washed up in the last three weeks.

But the Environment Agency and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) say this has nothing to do with the sinking of the Ice Prince.

Billy Elliott, from Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service, said that while he respected their views it would foolish to completely discount the vessel as the source of the oil.

"I am certainly not an expert in these matters but when the wood arrives one day and the oiled birds the next it just seems a large coincidence."
