The 11 men have set themselves the challenge of cycling 300 miles in four days to raise money for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and MSA (Multiple System Atrophy) Trust.

Most of the group, dubbed Team KTDA Worthing, were born and bred in Worthing and still live in the town. Joining them is old friend Peter Latos, who is now based in Moscow.

Peter said: “The majority of us met through college and the local county league football circuit, and having reached the wrong side of 40 have decided to give ourselves a challenge on two wheels as our bodies cannot cope with 90 minutes of football any more!”

Also on the ride are Dave Page, Gary Page, Michael McClean, Mark McCallum, Tony Fraser, Matt Wood, Lewis French, David Hemmings, Martin Dunphy and Eli Dunphy.

They set off from Sea Lane Café in Goring this morning at 6am and hope to arrive at the Arc de Triomphe on Monday, with a target of raising £12,000 through corporate and personal sponsorship.

Peter added: “An epic ride of 300 miles, we will be averaging around 75 miles a day, with Day 1 being the toughest on the route, starting in Worthing and finishing in Dover at a total of 97 miles.

“We thought that it would be a nice gesture to give something back to charities that have a local connection, which will inspire and motivate us to complete our ride.

“As family men and the majority of us parents ourselves, these charities are close to our hearts - the latter as my former colleague, and a local man from Lancing Manor, was recently diagnosed with Multiple Systems Atrophy.”
