Old Town facelift

If you've been through Old Town lately there's every chance you know these faces.

This is the team responsible for the extensive work that's now evident in the historic high street - namely the stunning new brick pavements that have just been laid.

Site agent Rick Fretwell met with Bexhill Old Town Preservation Society chairman Michael Kent and conservation officer Mark Brittle to examine the achievement this week.

Rick commented: "The work has been going on for six weeks so far...it's basically about crowd control, but actually the public has been very helpful during the work taking place. People have understood we have got to get on and they have all cooperated with our scheme of work. I think the whole project has gone very well - there have been a few hiccups, but they were resolved straight away."

Mark Brittle added: "This has been the most important restoration of the historic fabric of the Old Town the Society has undertaken. It puts the Georgian and Victorian architecture into perspective. It has been a marvellous collaberative project...the contractors have been amazing, and we have had terrific support and expertise from East Sussex County Council's Highways Department, as well as Rother District Council's Conservation Office."

The Old Town was the first conservation area in Bexhill, according to OTPS chairman Michael Kent who said: "We are striving to give something back here."

Other recent changes included installing 30 Victorian lamposts throughout the Old Town last year.
