Older motorcyclist from Hailsham dies helping friend

AN OLDER MAN collapsed and died of natural causes when he tried to help his friend in a motorcycle incident.

Kenneth Jarrett, aged 71, from Mill Road, Hailsham, died near Carters Corner just after 10.15am on Sunday, October 2.

Police said Mr Jarrett was riding a motorcycle accompanied by a 62-year-old friend from Eastbourne.

The friend came off his Triumph motorcycle at Carters Corner after both men went around a corner.

They were faced with a stationary concrete mixer lorry and the friend skidded off the road to avoid the lorry.

Mr Jarrett managed to stop safely and went to help his friend. But he sadly collapsed and died at the scene, despite efforts to revive him.

The 62-year-old man, from Eastbourne, who received minor injuries was taken by ambulance to Eastbourne District General Hospital for treatment.

He has since been discharged from the hospital.

The matter has been referred to the Coroners Officer and a post mortem is due to take place later in the week.
