Olympic effort sees Bognor pupils competing under different flags

Australia were the winners of Olympic games staged on a Bognor Regis campus.

The successful event enabled hundreds of children to take part in an international competition.

It was the first of its kind on the shared Westloats Lane campus of The Glade Infant School, Michael Ayres Junior School and Bognor Regis Community College.

The Aussies took the gold medals, with Brazil claiming silver for second place and the UK winning bronze for third. Brazil and the USA were the other countries represented by the 310 competitors aged from six to 11.

A 200-strong contingent came from Michael Ayres and 50 each from the other schools.

Michael Ayres' deputy headteacher Alex Blackman said: "It was an unbelievably successful and enjoyable event which we hope to repeat."

The event began with an opening ceremony in the main hall at the Arena sports centre.

The children entered following their flag to the national anthems of their countries and watched community college students perform an energetic dance routine which represented various nations.

A dancer also completed the journey of the Olympic flame.

A variety of sporting events followed, such as team games, races and throwing. Children from the different schools worked with each other.

They were organised by community college sports leader students, and some play activity leaders from Michael Ayres, with the help of staff from the schools. Jenny Rees, of the community college, carried out the overall co-ordination.

Photographers and reporters of all ages covered the competitors' activities.
