Olympics 2012 spark county traffic concerns

'NIGHTMARE' traffic conditions on the A27 across West Sussex could cause severe problems in the lead-up to the 2012 Olympics, when the county is expecting a huge influx of contestants and visitors, a County Hall meeting was warned.

The concerns led to calls for more pressure to be piled on the Government to bring forward multi-million pound improvements plans for the congestion-plagued road.

The county council's strategic environmental services select committee also called for major improvements to be implemented as soon as possible at Gatwick railway station, in advance of the games.

The committee heard that West Sussex was regarded nationally and regionally as one of the leading counties in a collective approach to 2012.

And members supported a suggestion from Cllr Christina Freeman that UK contestants who won medals at the Beijing Olympics should be invited to attend a county council meeting in Chichester.

"This would put West Sussex right at the top - we have already gone from strength to strength," she said.

But Cllr Freeman and others highlighted serious fears about the A27, as West Sussex gears up to provide training camps for contestants and also hopes for a major boost for businesses.
