Oops-a-daisy!

AN ELDERLY woman's automatic car crashed through the front of a Worthing supermarket on Monday.Staff and customers at the Co-op Superstore, Newland Street, were left stunned when the Jaguar came through the shop front at around 10.30am.

It is thought the woman had been shopping in the store and may have put the car, which was parked in a disabled space in front of the shop, in the drive gear instead of reverse.

Somehow, the vehicle shot between two protective posts, with just centimetres to spare on either side.

Store manager John Goldspink said he surmised the driver may have tried to put the car in reverse but, when she started going forward, hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

"This raised the vehicle into quite a frenzy and it blasted through the front wall."

Mr Goldspink went on to say: "It was very fortunate there were not any injuries. Obviously, the driver was very shaken. It could have been catastrophic.

"Obviously, the staff were surprised to see the car coming towards them at a rate of knots."

He said a large amount of damage was caused to the front of the shop but there was no threat to the customers.

The woman was given the all- clear from the ambulance service, which attended the incident.
