Animals, by Emma Jane Unsworth

When Caitlin Moran writes that she wishes she had written this book, you just know it's going to be good. Good, and yet oddly familiar. I couldn't put my finger on it at first, and it was nagging away at me till it dawned on me.

Familiar in the sense that it was a memory of something buried from a long time ago. Got it! It reminded me of a night out with long time pal Julie Burchill.

When I say night out, I mean early morning stagger home. Oh, those were the days.

Tyler, in the book has the most brilliant one liners.

'Reality is for people TOO WEAK FOR DRUGS' or when discussing films; 'Gutted when I found out that Room with a View didn't have a sniper'.

Tyler is one of those characters that will haunt you with her wit and her charm. She's dangerous. Not to be trusted. But oh my goodness she's fun. Very much like La Burchill. Tyler summons the night and then rides it into oblivion, whooping along, dragging all in her path to hell and back.

This is a riotous, wham bam helter skelter account of female friendship. Adults who most definitely don't behave as adults. It's lyrical and poetic, raunchy and rude. It has the makings of an instant cult and you absolutely must read it. It's a Jerwood Fiction Uncovered prize winner and I quite see why.
