Bypass badly needed

Good.

An Arundel bypass would act as a catalyst for economic growth, not only in Arun district, but across West Sussex as a whole.

In particular, it will become a gateway for regeneration in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

It would solve one third of the A27 problem.

A new settlement of around 6,500 homes at Ford Airfield (at 268 acres, the largest available brownfield site in West Sussex) might generate enough planning obligation to fund an Arundel bypass (in addition to much-needed homes and jobs) and would also reduce the pressure for greenfield development in other parts of the district.

Has this possibility been properly considered in Arun District Council’s Local Development Framework (LDF)?

The answer is of interest to the whole of West Sussex.

The new NPPF makes it clear that local planning authorities should work with other authorities and providers to take account of the need for strategic infrastructure including nationally-significant infrastructure within their areas.

The need for improvement to the road network in West Sussex is clear and urgent and it is becoming increasingly important that one of the more parochial of our district councils should no longer be allowed to undermine the economic growth of West Sussex as a whole.
