Armed forces day set to be a highlight of calendar year

ALL the hard work paid off - Bexhill Veterans' Association's armed forces day parade and event was a resounding success.

The town has always been very receptive to any activity involving our troops - underpinned by Peterhouse reaching its 100th shoebox for soldiers in Afghanistan and the recent concert of RAFA's President's Band.

And quite right too.

By no means diminishing the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, the plight of modern-day troops who are very often under-resourced in unpopular conflicts deserves to be highlighted.

The Bexhill Veterans' Association's day at Egerton Park honoured both.

Thanks to the huge turnout - no doubt helped by the emergence of summery weather - the event looks set to become a very important milestone in Bexhill's calendar year.

Time to honour your own heroes

SPEAKING of heroes, it is time for everyone in Bexhill to consider nominating that special person or organisation in their lives.

The Bexhill Achievers Awards 2010 was launched this week, and looks set to be another glittering event at the De La Warr Pavilion.

With 17 categories available to choose from, there's scope to honour volunteers, charities, sports achievers, community groups, emergency services and healthcare workers, successful local businesses, teachers, those who have shown bravery against the odds, eco-heroes and tourism venues.

Nomination forms are easy to find - the Bexhill Observer will be printing them each week in the run-up to the ceremony in September, they are available on our website to download and there are a stack of them behind the counter at the office in 18 Sackville Road.

The deadline is August 23.
