At the Vets: Could your pet’s photograph win you a prize?

The competition has two categories: over 16 and under 16 and will be judged by award-winning pet photographer Paul Walker. The 1st prize winner of both categories will receive signed copies of Paul’s book and DVD which can be found on his website www.petsavers.org.uk/index.php/photography-competition.

The closing date for entries is January 31.

Petsavers’ aim is to improve the health of pets by relieving the distress and pain caused by diseases for which we currently have no effective treatments.

Over the last 30 years, Petsavers has awarded grants, exceeding £1.7million, to a large range of different projects, helping in the development of treatment and knowledge of many diseases to help pets and the vets that look after them.

Petsavers does not support any research that involves experimental animals.

Petsavers is currently focusing on two areas: Cancer and Critical Care. One patient who benefited from this research, is Sam a 10-year-old cat who was suffering from a tumour on his nose. His owners were reluctant for him to undergo surgery to remove the tumour, so instead he received a new type of treatment called ‘photodynamic therapy’. 

For this treatment, a light sensitive cream is applied repeatedly to the tumour before a special light is shone onto the area for 20 minutes.

Particles in the cream, which become activated by the light, then act to destroy the cancer cells but leave the healthy tissue alone.
