Budget cuts proved to be key as Ward slipped up on dismal day

The devastating error against Coventry City came from a most unlikely source as Darren Ward was almost casually dispossessed by Frank Nouble who set up the winner.

True, Wardy was out of position covering at left back, which had been a problem all game, but we would have expected better from a defender with his experience.

Despite another supreme display by Brian Jensen the defence had an off-day and offered hope to Coventry’s powder-puff attack.

At the other end Gavin Tomlin enjoyed possibly his best game of the season but Izale McLeod appeared to be off the pace and not greatly involved.

Naturally I read the match report on the club website and that showed that differing opinions are just that – opinions.

The match itself was probably exactly what we should all have expected. Two teams that have not enjoyed strong or consistent seasons. Two teams battling to save themselves from relegation in front of a packed house.

It had to be an encounter where nerves would be a problem and good quality football would likely be in short supply. Under the circumstances the standard of play wasn’t too bad.

Lee Fowler improved on his disappointing showing at Peterborough and more of his astute passes reached their target.

He has been Dean Saunders’ best signing. When Lewis Young was substituted with an injury he received a standing ovation from all parts of the ground and he has been the player who has improved most under the current manager.

Gavin Tomlin has run him close though in the improvement stakes.

The financial constraints placed on the management was the key factor in Crawley Town’s relegation.

Crawley must avoid the mayhem of the last close season.

Prompt promotion from League Two would certainly be aided if Saunders remains at the helm and is able to work again with the bulk of his current squad.

Changes are inevitable but they need to be specific and positive to improve the squad and not wholesale simply to save money.
