Chestnut Tree: helping children and their families in their own homes

Over the past few weeks our nurses have been busy in the community doing a very worthwhile job with many new and existing families in East Sussex.

Our community nurses have a varied and important role which is vital to the child and their family during very difficult times. When one of our nurses visits a child’s home, parents and carers can take a well-earned break from round-the-clock responsibilities of caring for a sick child. This might mean a few hours uninterrupted sleep, a warm bath, or time to spend with their other children.

One of our community nurses has had a very busy couple of weeks dealing with several very poorly babies and neonatal referrals in the community. She has provided support to each of the children and their families following diagnosis, and will carry on doing so through the whole disease process. Whether this is through offering advice and information, or through play and counselling, the nurse will be there with a helping hand whenever and wherever it is needed.

Another of our nurses has had an influx of referrals of young people with cancer. Sadly, four of the young people have since passed away and our nurse has been very instrumental in supporting them and their whole family with specialist medical care and bereavement support, giving them the opportunity to say goodbye in their own time and way, wherever that might be.

So many people are unaware that this care is possible in their own communities. We want to reach out and ensure we are meeting the needs of families across the whole of East Sussex. You can find out more about the work we do on our website chestnut-tree-house.org.uk.
