CHRISTIAN COMMENT: One very big mess

A WISE man once commented that being at the very top is a heady experience tempered only by the realisation that the only path left is back down again.

This is as true for a mountain climber as for a nation’s leadership.

The last couple of days witnessed the humiliating descent of two of Europe’s top leaders.

In this dreadful economic climate people demand leaders deliver a solution, or take the fall.

Unfortunately, this crisis has gone way beyond the ability of any individual or party to resolve, so expect more heads to roll.

This is not a great time to be a politician – unless you also believe in miracles.

But in this day and age, who does?

Our enlightened culture long ago dispensed with God, and the department of miracles.

Today’s wise man would even argue: “If God really exists, and if he really cares, then why did he allow us to get into this mess in the first place?”

Put differently: Big Mess = No God. Case closed!

But hey, shouldn’t that read: “Big Mess = Very Sick Animal”?

You can’t argue from that, that a big mess is evidence that vets don’t exist or care.

The same applies in the current economic crisis. We made such a stupendous mess of it that even we can’t believe we actually did it!

So why blame God?

There’s an old saying that goes: “You make your bed, you sleep in it.”

That’s a hard pill to swallow. Yet it underlines why a society needs to act justly and responsibly.

We’re all to blame so maybe we could start by reflecting on “How did we really get here?” and “Does what the Bible predicts will happen to societies that forget God and reject His commands, bear any relation to the current crisis?”

And yes, we must also revise those childish views about God.

He is, of course, a loving and merciful God.

But that does not equate to a Being who exists solely to follow us around with an almighty pooper-scooper and cleaning crew.
