Council needs to get a grip on waste fiasco

Rother Council’s money saving waste collection deal is in danger of turning into a false economy of astronomical proportions as uncollected waste continues to mount up and tempers reach breaking point.

We fully understand the anger and frustration that we have been hearing on an almost daily basis.

The council wasted no time in proclaiming the new system as a success - a statement that is now looking horribly premature.

Waste collection is an essential front-line service. If a council cannot get that right what can it get right?

Council tax is a substantial annual expenditure for many households that are feeling the financial pinch. They are entitled to question whether they are getting value for money.

It is absurd to furnish people with shiny new bins, bombard them with glossy leaflets and then fail to remove their waste.

Of even greater concern is the potential health hazard that piles of uncollected waste can cause. We are already hearing of rats, flies and maggots.

Rother may be justified at laying some of the blame at the door of contractors Kier but ultimately it is the district council that needs to get a grip on the situation.
