Just a Minute

THE Greeks had at least four words for it. We've got one: "love," or if you're American, "Lerv." Four-love for the Greeks then!

Perhaps this is one of the reasons why we often confuse love with feeling amorous, not always the same thing as many sadly discover.

Then again we tend to confuse loving with liking: in fact you can love somebody sincerely but not like them very much at all.

Where do we find a reliable guide to the true meaning of love?

1. Look at the life of Jesus - real love, God's love, in action.

2. Look at St Paul's famous definition: "Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy wit evil, but is happy with the truth.

Love never gives up; its faith and hope and patience never fail. This sort of love never ends."

This is God's ongoing Valentine prezzie to whoever will receive it - rather more costly than chocolates and perfume etc. He thinks we're worth it!
