Kino is beacon of people power

If you need an example of what people in a local community can achieve when they put their mind to it then look no further than the Fletcher in Rye group and the Kino Cinema project.

This was a small group of people, determined to create something good and lasting for the Rye community who took on the big guns in order to prevent an unwanted housing development being built on the site of what has always been a community facility.

They then had to overcome significant planning challenges and opposition to open a cinema in the heart of Rye’s Citadel conservation area.

Not only did they succeed but they did it in style.

The Kino has already scooped two major awards since opening its doors in January, including an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Rye now has a cinema and arts space that is the envy of many towns from miles around - a remarkable achievement in every way.

The Rye Observer set its stall out from the very start in supporting the cinema project, which was being treated with scepticism by some.

We are happy to have been proved right and pleased that Rye now has a cultural landmark of this quality.
