Light at the end of the tunnel at last

It cannot be right that in the 21st century we still have diesel trains operating on a single track line.

Let’s not take anything away from Amber Rudd’s rail summit this week. This is the clearest indication in the last two decades that the line could get electrification and dual tracking.

We are though optimistically cautious. Amber has already been picked up on for using the phrase ‘high speed trains coming soon’

This may not even be properly approved until 2024 - ten years down the line - and that is before work even begins.

We could have a new government next year and support for this needs to be maintained.

Having said all that - well done Amber and all those involved.

Rother Council’s bland and anodyne response to the situation at Rye Cemetery (page 3) is as shabby as their maintenance of the cemetery.

The fact that fallen trees have been laying across memorial stones for so long is a total disgrace. No heart-felt apology to the lady who complained at least three times - just ‘sorry for the inconvenience’.
