My house is a home, a school, a workplace, an all-you-can-eat-buffet, a gym, a circus - and now a stage | Kelly Brown

Musical additions into the Brown home.....
I’m not sure if I’m past the point of madness, but for reasons I can’t explain I’ve added an extra element into our household lockdown mix - music lessons.

Now of course music is a fantastic release and a wonderful distraction, but as I try to concentrate (while hearing the squeaky strings of a violin) I do wonder what I was thinking as the working from home whilst home learning ‘fun’ continues.

Before this latest lockdown ingredient was added, my house was a scene which I’m sure is familiar to many.

I’m standing in the kitchen on the phone to my boss trying to have a conversation. Most of it is my apologising profusely for being less than productive because I’ve already had to stop 18 times that morning to help work out the angles of triangles, or help underline all of the ‘time adverbials’ in a bit of text.

When was it essential in life for an eight-year-old to know what an adverbials, preposition or synonym is? (But I digress as my brain is just too tired to cope with these kind of big questions anymore).

At the same time my boy is yelling, from the living room, random geography questions at me.

And finally there is a huge amount of banging coming from my daughter’s bedroom as she tackles her next round of star jumps in a virtual PE session.

It is the utter chaos of our new everyday lives as parents up and down the country desperately Google for ANY update about when their children can go back to school.

But, of course, the proof that I have seemingly lost the plot came when I accepted an invitation for my children to restart their music lessons virtually - because why not?

So now twice a week my house is now not only a home, a school, a workplace, an all-you-can-eat buffet, a gym and a circus, but it is also now a stage for my children to perfect their musical talents. (I secretly enjoy hearing it, but it does nothing to help me get on with my own work.)

Who knows what else my home will become next? Answers on a postcard please!
