Playing in the garden

The gardens at Chestnut Tree House are looking lovely. When I got to work the other day at 7.50am, one of the boys was just coming in from the garden in his wheelchair.

When I asked what he had been doing he said “playing on the swing”. He was dressed and looking very comfortable in his onesie.

When a young person lives with breathing difficulties due to their medical condition, just breathing fresh air outside can make a huge difference, but it’s not something they are always able to do in public parks because wheelchairs and breathing equipment get in the way.

Later in the day, I saw him outside again with his brother playing with our outdoor musical instruments.

I think their game was who could make the most noise! It is heart-warming to see the children having fun outside as opposed to playing all those computer games, although that probably rather reflects my age group!

The grounds at Chestnut Tree House play a significant part in the work we do.

There are many areas for enjoyment, some noisy, some for play, some for just running about and some for quiet thinking time.

We are very lucky to have a number of corporate supporters who send teams of staff to volunteer to spruce-up our grounds.

Every week, and in all weathers, a different team are outside painting the fences, pruning, sweeping and planting to ensure the outdoor environment remains a wonderful place for the children and families to enjoy.

And of course, everyone is very excited about the creation of our new woodland walk as it will be completely wheelchair accessible, including a rather magical treehouse – but I will tell you more news of that later in the year!

Chestnut Tree House, in Dover Lane, Arundel, cares for over 280 children and young adults from 0-25 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions.
