Potholes issue drives motorists round the bend

IT'S a national problem which is driving motorists everywhere mad.

Yes, we're talking about the crop of potholes which has sprung up in the roads since the ice and snow in February.

The Observer has received several calls and e-mails from residents dismayed by the annoying - and sometimes dangerous - state of Bexhill's highways.

There is nothing more frustrating for a driver to keep ducking and dodging holes in the road, especially if a pothole is hit and damage caused to the vehicle.

The question is that of maintenance.

If the roads had been looked after more carefully in the past, then the ice and snow would not have had the degree of freeze-thaw impact we have seen this year.

Highways are of course the responsibiity of the county council, but further highlighting of the potholes issue cannot hurt.

So if you're aware of a particularly nasty pothole or stretch of battered road, then feel free to let the Observer know about it.

Forum vote idea is interesting

THE proposal by Bexhill Town Forum chairman Paul Plim to allow everyone a vote at meetings is very interesting.

At present, votes are held by those representing organisations but not by the general public, although residents are allowed the chance to speak on issues in advance.

If passed on Tuesday, this motion would not hold up Forum proceedings but bring a more representative cross-section of opinion to the vote and help make the man on the street feel more included in the process.

Bexhill does sometimes suffer from not having its own town council, whose vacuum the Forum was originally set up to fill.

So anything to strengthen the group's collective voice would be more than welcome to those living in the town.
