Staffing levels have been reduced by almost a third since 2010 and the council is struggling to respond adequately to questions and queries raised by the public it serves as we saw with the new waste collection shambles earlier this year.

If it is true that Rother has a policy of directing everything through its website this is simply not acceptable.

There are many elderly people in the Rye and Battle area who do not use computers regularly and come from a generation where speaking to another human being is normal. Besides, Rother’s website is not the most intuitive or user-friendly.

We are not blaming the hard-working staff and officers at the district council, many of who have probably seen their workloads dramatically increase.

It is the ruling party which needs to be taken to task for blatantly going against the advice of officers and freezing the council tax for the past four years. Cllr Sam Souster warned that the real cost to people here would dramatic in terms of its impact on services.

They love to boast that Rother has the lowest Council Tax in Sussex - soon it will have the poorest services in the county too.
