ST BARNABAS: Marathon runners raising vital funds for hospice

This year's Brighton Marathon will take place this Sunday and covers a gruelling 26.2 miles stretching as far east as Ovingdean and as far west as Shoreham, much of which covers the coastal road through Brighton and Hove.

Some 12,000 runners will be taking part having trained for several months to complete this challenge.

St Barnabas House is one of over 400 charities represented and we are proud to say that we have around 20 runners taking part in the full marathon who have all pledged to raise sponsorship towards the work of caring for adults with advanced, progressive, life-limiting illnesses and their families in Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield.

We need to raise almost £6million per year to provide all St Barnabas House’s care services and the amazing contribution that these people are making continues to astound me; we are forever grateful to them.

Our events team have been busy ensuring that the runners are ready to go, giving them support, advice and motivational tips; they are also on hand with incentives to help runners reach their fundraising targets.

As a charity we receive just 21 per cent of our care costs from the government, therefore every penny helps!

On Sunday we will be out in force at various points along the route, cheering on all the runners and keeping them going to the finishing line.

We will also be inviting our runners and their families to join us at our charity marquee at the finish where we will offer them refreshments and a free massage, as our way of showing just how grateful we are to each and every runner and the difference they have made to the patients and families for whom we care.
