Last weekend, I attended three of our local annual fetes: St Clements & All Saints in the Old Town, Fairlight Village Hall Summer Fair and Westfield Fair.

All three provided fun for all the family with a notable array of stalls, games, food and lucrative fundraising ideas from the human slot machine to the coconut shy!

There was also a wonderful display of dance and gymnastics by Acromax in Westfield. I always enjoy supporting such great events in the local summer fundraising calendar; supporting our local church which is looking beautiful since its restoration, helping to upkeep our Village Hall and assisting our local charities that do so much to change the lives of individuals in our community.

I hope to attend many more such events over the coming months and I know that the Jerwood is hosting its Lowry by the Sea exhibition as part of the gallery’s summer Festival of the Sea from 11th June until 1st November.

At this time of year we also think of all the young people across Hastings and Rye who are taking A level or GCSE exams.

As I know from my own home, Summer can be a stressful time for parents, teachers and of course the students themselves who are facing huge decisions about their future.

I regularly visit all of our local schools whenever I can and it’s always a pleasure to hear about the next generation’s future ambitions.

Just last week I welcomed some students from Sussex Coast College to Parliament and I was as impressed as always with how articulate, well-informed and aspirational our local sixth formers are.

As well as those taking exams there are those heading out into the world of work or taking apprenticeships. And here in Hastings and Rye we have a record number of apprenticeships with 3860 more apprenticeships across the constituency since 2010.

Thanks to our local Jobs Centre, great local sixth forms and colleges, our youth facing tough decisions this summer have stellar advice close at hand.

But of course there is always more we can do to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for young people to get them into jobs and training so that they can go on to fulfil their dreams and ambitions.

That is why every year I host a Careers Fair and Jobs Fair to encourage all those looking for a job, training scheme or apprenticeships to meet future employers and get their career advice.

We must not forget that it is our young people upon whom we all rely for the prosperity of future generations to come.

And I will continue to make sure they are our priority and continue to get a better deal for a brighter, more secure future.
