VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Becoming a guiding light for town’s visitors

GUIDES are needed to give visitors the real ‘Littlehampton experience’ at one of the town’s most popular attractions.

The Look & Sea Centre, in Fisherman’s Quay, is searching for someone to lead visitors to the site around its Littlehampton Experience exhibition.

The role could involve helping with school tours around the centre’s five-storey viewing tower and workshops.

There is also some scope to get involved with historic re-enactments from time to time.

n Those with a sympathetic ear are needed to offer emotional support to distressed and emotional people.

The Samaritans offers a 24-hour hotline to provide confidential and emotional help for people who may be feeling suicidal.

The charity is this week appealing for a new listener to join its ranks.

No particular skills are required as volunteers will be given full training, but the applicant would need an ability to listen without judging or giving advice.

Prospective volunteers must be 18 or over to apply.

n Advisors are needed to help bolster the county’s recycling rate – by providing residents with top tips on reducing household waste sent to landfill.

West Sussex County Council runs the advisor scheme in partnership with the Arun District Council, waste contractors and the WasteBuster project.

The aim of the initiative is to inform, educate and inspire locals to waste less and recycle more. Volunteers support the county council waste prevention team to deliver recycling and waste reduction messages within their communities and at planned events. Volunteers are encouraged to start up initiatives of their own.

n A charity shop in Littlehampton is appealing for fresh hands to help keep things running smoothly.

Littlehampton Link to Hope, in Anchor Springs, helps rebuild lives and communities in eastern Europe through social care and education projects, operating in Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria and Albania.

The organisation is looking for someone to help at the store in a number of roles, either by making up outfits, or arranging displays and stock. All the cash raised goes to helping needy communities oversea.
