VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Lots of opportunities to lend a helping hand within the local community

Volunteer at a family fun day – Jamie’s Wish Trust

Jamie’s Wish operates solely by unpaid volunteers, including the two co-founders Tracey Terry and Jody Lee who manage the charity.

An annual family fun day is held in Littlehampton every July to raise crucial funds for the charity, and they are looking for volunteers to help at the event next year.

Roles available include: dressing up in a mascot costume and walking around greeting children, shaking hands, high fives, and providing photo opportunities; manning a fundraising stall with a Jamie’s Wish long-serving volunteer; distributing leaflets to businesses and residential homes; walking advertising on the day of the family fun day; and helping set up the venue for the one day event.

Funding volunteer – Home-Start Arun

Home-Start is a voluntary organisation in which volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes, helping to prevent family crisis and breakdown.

They are looking for a volunteer to lead a team of staff and trustees in preparing funding bids for existing and new sources of funding.

You will need to be computer literate and able to research the internet and local organisations to find new sources of funding, and experience in the business world would be beneficial.

Shop trolley volunteer (Arundel) – Sussex Community NHS Trust

Sussex Community NHS Trust is the specialist provider of community health and care services to the people of West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.

They are looking for volunteers to take a small trolley around the wards at Arundel and District Community Hospital so patients can purchase small sundries.

This is a new service for the patients and they hope to set this up in the afternoons.

They are looking for good communicators who have empathy with the elderly and their needs, and are trustworthy and reliable.

You need to be over 16 and have the ability to push a small trolley around the wards.

Help in the charity shop – Leonard Cheshire Disability

Leonard Cheshire Disability provides services in support of disabled people in the widest context: care at home, supported living, domiciliary support, day services, rehabilitation and respite care.

They are looking for volunteers to help in their shop, a small scale venture in the gardens of St Bridget’s, Rustington, which helps to raise funds for the home.

The role includes a variety of tasks – serving customers, sorting donations, keeping the shop tidy and clean and tallying the daily takings – so there are always things to do.

They need people who can help on Wednesday mornings between 9.45am and 12.15pm, and for the bank to cover sessions when regular volunteers are away.
