You will be expected to work with other staff on a programme of activities, bringing in new ideas and approaches to working with challenging groups of young people.

Each volunteer is encouraged to work a minimum of two hours a week, but any time a committed volunteer can give is most welcome.

You will need a general interest and willingness to work with young people; have good humour and patience; and be friendly, sympathetic and open-minded.

Previous youth work would be a bonus but not necessary.

Independent Visitor Scheme – West Sussex County Council

The West Sussex Independent Visitor Scheme needs male and female volunteers over the age of 21 to visit and befriend children in care.

Children are from 8-16 years of age and may have little or no contact with their birth family, or it may be good for them to have an adult outside of the professional network around them to provide a supportive relationship.

An Independent Visitor sees their child about once a month, perhaps taking them out for a cycle ride, to go swimming or to the cinema.

They have to give a minimum commitment of two years in order to offer the child continuity and consistency.

Independent Visitors are carefully selected and two days of training is compulsory. Expenses are paid to cover petrol and activity costs.

Drivers – Contact the Elderly

Contact the Elderly is a national charity whose aim is to relieve the loneliness and isolation felt by elderly people living alone.

They meet on the third Sunday of every month in a volunteer host’s home where they chat over tea and cakes.

More drivers are needed to collect up to three elderly people from their homes and take them to the host’s house for tea at 3pm.

They should then be available to return them home at 5pm.

Most drivers choose to stay at the host’s home with the guests during the tea but this is not essential.

You will need a full driving licence and use of a car, as well as patience and compassion for elderly people.

Oral History Volunteer – Arundel Museum Society

Arundel Museum was founded in 1964; it is an independent, accredited, museum run totally by volunteers who are members of the Arundel Museum Society.

Arundel Museum exists to acquire, conserve and display objects related to Arundel’s history and heritage; they want to create a gateway to the past in an exciting and inspiring learning environment which is accessible to all.

Oral History Volunteers are required to interview older people, recording memories of their lives, experiences and local events – this is done in the older person’s home.

The interview is then transcribed into to a computer, themes are analysed and the final copy is produced.

Interviewers need to have a pleasant manner and be used to dealing with people, whilst transcribers need to be confident using a computer with good literacy and typing skills.
