VOLUNTEER: Kind people needed to reach out and help community

Rustington-based charity The Voice of Progress, the talking newspaper for the Littlehampton and Worthing’s blind and partially sighted, is hunting for a new head of outreach.

The role would involve working with a small team of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers producing the audio newspaper.

Those considering the position would need to be self-motivated, proactive and capable of helping to develop and nurture the group’s listenership.

Local travel may be required on an occasional basis and any expenses incurred would be refunded.

A business advisor is needed to inspire future entrepreneurs.

Young Enterprise’s advisors work with students aged between 14 and 19 who will be running a real company for the next academic year.

The business adviser will need to attend the company’s weekly board meetings and be there to guide the team on how to work more effectively.

Previously, volunteers to lend a hand have varied from entrepreneurs to stay-at-home parents, on a career break.

Enthusiasm and an interest in encouraging young people to achieve their potential are vital, as is flexibility, patience, punctuality and communication.

Adults are needed to help youngsters who have been in trouble with the law.

Volunteers would be working with the West Sussex Youth Offending Service, which supports ten to 17-year-olds in avoiding a potential life of crime.

They work with children and their families, as well as other organisations and communities groups, in an effort to try to prevent youngsters from re-offending.

The charity is looking for new ‘appropriate adults’ to help youngsters being interviewed by police.

The role aims to safeguard the rights and welfare of children while in police custody.

Where a parent or guardian is unable to attend the police station, one of the volunteers could be called upon to act as an appropriate adult. Full training would be given.

An activities volunteer in Rustington is needed by the Sussex Community NHS Trust. They would assist in memory groups, led by occupational therapists, as well as general activities.
