Volunteers needed to teach children seaside safety tips

Lifeboat charity the RNLI, which has a lifeboat station based at Fisherman’s Quay, Littlehampton, is searching for a new education presenter to teach youngsters vital seaside safety tips.

The education presenters play a key role in slashing the number of emergency incidents across the area, said the operation manager for Littlehampton’s station, Nick White.

Mr White explained: “The role of an education volunteer is a vital one.

“For us, sea safety is top of the list. Our job is to prevent loss of life and speaking to children about sea safety is one of the ways we can do this.

“Thousands of children, from schools, Scouts, Cubs and youth groups, make trips to see us. We teach them all kinds of things from understanding what certain types of flags on the beach mean, to getting them to understand if the water is safe enough or deep enough to swim in and dive into.

“Our education presenters are really important to us.”

The role would see applicants speaking to children and young people.

Presenters would also need to organise some of their own sessions and talks.

Full training will be given and expenses are paid.

Applicants need a good personality, common sense and dedication to the RNLI.

No particular skills are required as volunteers will be given full training.

n The Littlehampton branch of Save The Children is searching for a new retail shop assistant.

The volunteer would help serve customers, keep the shop tidy and play a key role in organising the many donations delivered to the store, in Surrey Street.

The work would also see the volunteer manning the tills and helping to organise the shop’s range of displays.
