Wharf owner helps keep jobs afloat

AT a time when jobs are scarce and under threat you would be hard pressed to find one individual who is doing more to preserve and create employment in the area than Rod Chapman.

He created the thriving Atlas Business Park on Rye Harbour Road and it was on Rod’s watch that Rye was re-born as a serious commercial port.

Huge vessels now regularly load and unload at Rye and with new developments at Rye Wharf even larger ships are set to arrive.

Rod is not the sort of person to seek attention or the limelight but the Rye Observer pays tribute to his unstinting drive, energy and enthusiasm.

Rye, as it so often does, broke ranks with Hastings and Bexhill this week. This time it was over the council’s decision not to fly the Town Hall flag at half-mast for Baroness Thatcher’s funeral on Wednesday.

The council said that while it was right to honour the monarchy, the post of Prime Minister is a political appointment.

Rye Town Council has a tradition of acting in the best interests of the town and not in a political way.

The flag decision is not out of character with Rye, which historically has shown a strong independent streak.
