London, 1944 – A child’s eye view of death, by Juliet Lockwood

MY terrified two-year-old brother, my gran and I were taken to a nearby doctors house after the underground shelter we were in had been bombed.

I was offered warm milk, but although only four years old, insisted it be boiled, as, having had TB, unscalded milk could cause my death!

Walking home in the early hours, doodlebugs dropping bombs all around us, I knew no fear – my milk had been boiled!
