It is worth noting, since 2003, people informally have gathered annually at the war memorial in Carlisle Road (what remained of Ascham The College Preparatory School after it was demolished for development).

Remembrance prompted a keen interest in fund-raising to restore the delapidated gate in 2009, in time for marking the Great War 1914-1918, a hundred years ago, and inspired a book about the old boys listed on the memorial.

In the 1920s, Gordon Carey, a teacher at Eastbourne College, saw the young generation growing up without knowing what their fathers did, and edited a school history, with others, to fill that gap (An Outline Of The Great War, 1929, Cambridge).

As a veteran, he valued Easbourne College’s embellishing tradition - secret peace-time giving to build the school.

The restored war memorial can be seen as part of that tradition, with credit all round.
