Emotional day as lifeboat returns

What an emotional day Friday, July 1 was when the Cyril & Lilian Bishop's keel touched Hastings beach, 50 yards away from where she had been launched on various occasions during her 19 years of service as Hastings Lifeboat.

At one time, out of a crew of nine, there were eight Winkle Club members making her a true community boat.

Six members of the White family were known to have been associated with launching and crewing her as well as having been built by a Samuel White.

Work and fundraising has already started with anonymous donations from people in memory of various relations with and without ties to the RNLI and fishing fleet. A substantial cheque was handed over to our treasurer by Dave Brokington to help us on our way and also a lady whose brother was rescued from Dunkirk Beach during ‘Operation Dynamo’. Mrs Siggins remembered him with a donation.

Lots of other cheques and cash amounts are helping towards our £15,000 target for the renovation and dock area, which has kindly been donated by Hastings Boro’ Council outside All Saints Church and the Stables Theatre. Ion Castro has donated and is maintaining a website, www.the-boat.co.uk, which also features the Priscilla Macbean.

Next week there will be a report on a dramatic rescue made by this lifeboat when she actually capsized with a full crew on board, until then, if you are able to help with any photographs or information about the Cyril & Lilian Bishop it would be gratefully appreciated and should be sent to Ion at [email protected] or 01424 437468.

If you’d like to help us, cheques can be made payable to ‘The Macbean &Bishop Trust’ and sent to the treasurer at: 4, All Saints Crescent, Hastings, TN35 5PD or paid in at any Santander Bank to Sort Code 090128, A/c 49444310. Thank you.
