Enthusiasm and dignity in the role of mayor

IT saddens me to read your story of the mayor and mayoress falling asleep during a school performance and which got prominent billing in your issue of April 8.

See the web version of the original story "Dozing Worthing mayor has schoolchildren in tears". here

Nol Atkins is a courteous and considerate man for whom I have considerable respect and, as has been reported in the columns of your publication during recent months, has given both dignity and enthusiasm to the mayoralty.

During this time, his wife, Helena, has fought a serious disability to support him in his civic duties.

As shown by his comments, the mayor has explained the circumstances concerning the incident and apologised.

What a pity the anonymous parents, who no doubt are behind this story, had not sought an explanation from the mayor if they felt aggrieved at the alleged distress caused to their children.

Yet did this story warrant a front page banner headline supported by content bills outside newsagents?

Sadly, your story and the manner in which it was presented and publicised is yet another example of the febrile and bad-tempered society into which we have descended in recent times.
