Fire service praised

MY name is Thomas Evans and I live in Terringes Avenue in one of the two houses affected by the fire on the morning of Friday, July 30.

Just to correct what the fire service said in the article on the Herald website (Tarring shed arson attack), the fire seemed to start in or around the shed at the next-door property.

The fire was very intense, showing a bright orange fireball with ejections of bright orange flame being thrown into the night sky '“ intense enough to smash a window in the summer house adjacent and completely destroy the shed.

It also affected the tall trees in Durrington High School and the fencing dividing the school from the two houses '“ hot enough to warp metal!

The fire then spread through a wooden fence and through bushes and up the side of our summer house and across its roof, causing irreparable damage to the summer house and much of its contents.

Two fire engines and four police cars were in attendance and responded to our emergency call very quickly.

I, and my entire family, would like to offer our thanks for the wonderful job done by the fire department in particular.

At the time of their arrival, ash, flames and thick smoke was being blown across several houses and without attention, could have affected the houses and occupants directly.

I cannot tell you how dangerous the incident could have been.

Taking into account elderly and disabled residents in the houses in the area, it could have quite easily resulted in serious injury.

We have been made aware that the fire is being considered as suspicious.

I would like to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious to come forward to Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 with any information.
