80 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 31 March 1939. Fletching. Closed Again. About two dozen children assembled when the school reopened on Monday after being closed for a week owing to influenza and measles in the village. It was decided to close the school for a further week.

More Houses. A letter from the Parish Council has been considered by the Housing Needs Sub-Committee of the Uckfield Rural District Council and approval given to the recommendation for the erection of a further six cottages on the Council’s housing site The committee also recommend that approval be sought for the provision of 40 cottages for agricultural workers throughout the district.

Parochial Matters. The annual parish meeting was held in the Reading Room on Tuesday evening under the chairmanship of the Vicar, the Rev R W Burns-Cox. The accounts of the Smith’s and Leaches charities were approved. There was no other business, there being no parishioners present. A meeting of the Parish Council followed, at which it was agreed to take no further action with regard to the footpath on the Searles Estate. It was reported that six more council houses are being built in the parish in the near future. The Council decided to make further application for a by-law prohibiting the camping of gipsies in the area.

ARP Wardens. A meeting of the ARP warden’s was held in the Reading Room on Tuesday evening, the Vicar the Rev. R W Burns-Cox, being in the chair It was agreed to attend a meeting in The Uckfield Public Hall an April 19 at which Colonel Fookes is to speak. Routine business was dealt with regarding the wardens’ duties and it was decided to have regular meetings to keep the wardens together. It was reported that a gas van would visit the parish on April 15 for the wardens to have practical experience of going through gas. The chairman reported that the auxiliary fireman were now under the direction of the captain of the Uckfield Fire Brigade for their training. Mrs Chapman had at the request of the Medical Officer taken charge of the first-aid posts and would shortly be giving a course of six lectures in practical nursing.
