80 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 24 March 1939. Piltdown. Women’s Institute. Mrs Philip Jones presided and 34 members were present at the monthly meeting in the Lamb Hall on Tuesday. The business included suggestions for the annual outing, report of the delegate to the half-yearly council meeting at Tunbridge Wells, and a statement of accounts by the treasurer. Members promised gifts of clothing for an Easter parcel to be sent to the adopted family. Councillor Miss Fowler Tutt, of Lewes, gave a talk on Sussex Through The Ages. A competition for hyacinth bulbs was won by Mrs S Bellingham, with Miss H C Attenborough second, while one for cakes resulted in Mrs T Page being first, Mrs R Wood second, and Mrs G Wood third. A partner whist drive was arranged for April 17.
