For every cyclist there's one less car

Like those who have listed their concerns, many of which I share, I cannot accept what I consider to be exaggerated claims that the planned route will be a recipe for ‘conflict and confrontation’.

It is worth remembering that when the popular cycle route between Hastings and Bexhill was proposed, many of the same objections were raised where as, in reality, there have been no serious incidents and no deaths caused by cyclists which is a contrast with the numbers of cyclists killed and injured on our roads.

I have been a cyclist most of my life and can vouch for the numerous shared pedestrian/ cycle paths successfully operating across Europe, North America and indeed in many parts of the UK.

Experience has repeatedly shown that given time and good will shared paths can and do work, proving a valued asset to any community.

For example, in Hastings the cycle path to Bexhill provides a safe coastal route enjoyed by hundreds of people of all ages.

The annual Rotary Club On Yer Bike charity ride has raised thousands of pounds for good causes, just one example of many of families enjoying the ‘joys of cycling’ and supporting good causes.

I myself, along with some 25 riders raised over £60,000 for children with leukaemia, cycling from Rome to London.

Sadly, cycling on our roads today can be very threatening so consequently many older people are reluctant to cycle.

I have been knocked off my bike by a driver who did not stop, threatened by motorists impatient to over take, not to mention being exposed to the dangerous fumes belching out from buses and diesel cars.

Not surprisingly, parents are understandably also deeply concerned and reluctant to allow their children on to the roads.

In the past, I worked as a trainer for young cyclists at the local schools.

Unfortunately these training sessions, though helpful took place only on school play grounds with parents transporting children to and from school in their cars!

We need safe cycle paths; the benefits physically and emotionally are enormous.

In conclusion it is hoped that those who still remain unconvinced will take time to read the excellent public document prepared by Mike Hepworth and considered at the cabinet meeting when borough councillors approved the cycle path.

The author has detailed and addressed the concerns listed by your correspondents.

Yes, there are selfish and inconsiderate cyclists , as there are car drivers but if the plans for the cycle path as detailed are implemented, such individuals will be challenged and if necessary and may be refused admission to our park.

To the readers, I remind them of the motto of HUB namely...for ‘every cyclist there is one less car’ and to fellow cyclists my wish is ‘cycle safely and live in hope’.
