Goodbye Sally and thank you

News of the death of Sally Brampton at St Leonards on May 10 has completely shaken me, and I wish to express my personal feelings of loss.

I never met Sally but corresponded with her through her position as an agony aunt at the Sunday Times style magazine.

Her weekly columns I had read with interest and was always particularly impressed with her belief that to change any unhappy situation you first of all have to look at changing yourself to initiate change in others – a huge wisdom.

I wrote to her in 2006 about my own personal circumstances, being in an unhappy marriage and contemplating divorce.

To my amazement, it was published in the magazine.

The content of Sally’s reply was so understanding and perceptive in deciphering all traits of the behaviour I had described that it clarified many things for me.

She pointed out that the loss of intimacy in a relationship, be it physical or emotional, and for whatever reason, is the crux of the matter.

We corresponded a few times later, where she was so open and honest about her own situation too that I could not help but admire her expert knowledge, insightful approach, her sincerity and her caring and considerate nature.

She helped me, and many others I’m sure, through her work as a journalist, a writer and hugely innovative work as an editor.

I never met her, but feel that I have lost someone very special to me.

Goodbye Sally and thank you.
