Great entertainment in Chichester

JUST a brief note of gratitude for a great evening's entertainment at Chichester Festival Theatre's opening night of Stephen Sondheim's dark Victorian tale of the demon barber of Fleet Street on September 24.

Although a bleak topic for a musical, it was extremely amusing – especially Mrs Lovett’s character, expertly played by Imelda Staunton, who complemented the brooding and vengeful Michael Ball’s Mr Todd.

The rotating set, reclining barber’s chair, witty lyrics, supportive cast and music (not to mention the quantities of stage blood) all combined to make it a really atmospheric theatrical experience, so this musical may not be for the squeamish.

I hope this CFT’s Sweeney Todd production will become a great success.

Favourable reviews and more standing ovations ahead I am sure.

One of the best CFT productions I have seen in the past ten years.
