Great leap backwards

Ever walked around the town centre in the last few days and noticed a distinct difference and colour harmony achieved by Worthing Borough Council?

"Come to Sunny Worthing" is our town's motto.

Well, the whole publicity has now taken a great leap backward in one fine movement of introducing wheelie bins.

I live in the lower half of Gratwicke Road, where most tourists end up, to visit one of the many eating establishments in this area.

A few days ago it was quite pleasant to walk around this area, but now in every front of each house are two tall bins, one for general and one for recycling.

Upon ringing the Worthing & Adur refuse collection information telephone line I asked one question.

"Where do I put these bins ?"

The kind lady on the other end, "Outside your property."

In response, "okay no problems, I now have to place these bins in my front garden and enhance my property's look?"

Once more, the lady helped me by looking up the map of the local area and informed me I have rear access to my property, could place them in my backyard and, upon collection day, simply run them around the alley way around to the front of my property to pick them up.

If I have mobility issues, "I shall send you a form to be omitted from the scheme".

I was then informed that WBC has legislative powers to prosecute any person not following the new scheme.

Great, I thought, I can now be prosecuted for a scheme which is not well thought out or implemented, considering the impact upon the town centre's look.

"Thanks for your assistance," and the call ended.

So, upon investigating the instructions I find that, yes, I do have rear access, and the alley is blocked by many other people doing the same thing, but also an industrial size wheelie bin from the nearby shops. Mmmmm.

Please take a little time to just have a small walk around this area and see what WBC has done overnight to what has taken a long time to achieve, a beautiful place to live in.

I don't disagree with the wheelie bin scheme, just its visual impact upon the town.
