I hope more will start cycling

I am writing to you as a member of Hastings Greenway Group to applaud the action of Hastings Borough Council in approving a cycle route through Alexandra Park.

This is a critical link in the proposed cycle and walking network for Hastings which will also be accessible for people with disabilities.

This is an important first step in establishing a network of sustainable transport routes in Hastings and St Leonards.

Councillor Warren Davies spoke eloquently of the need to make the park available to all residents and at the same time to preserve the Victorian heritage. All of this can be achieved and the safety concerns of all will be addressed.

Probably more than ever there is a need to encourage people to use transport methods which do not harm the environment and at the same time keep us fit and healthy.

If you try to cycle on the roads in Hastings you will know how dangerous this is.

I hope that over time as safe routes are established that more and more people including school children will take to cycling and walking as the means to get around the town.

Your readers may not be aware that the Alexandra Park route will link up to a route to the town centre and from Bohemia and Silverhill through to Bexhill alongside the new Link Road.

The route through the park will be limited to one shared path which means that all other paths will be pedestrian only.

With suitable signage and encouragement of responsible use this will soon become a key amenity for all residents.
