Illuminating gesture

A VERY kind lady attended our garden fete in aid of the seafront lights last Sunday and handed me an envelope, saying it contained a donation to the summer illuminations, which she greatly enjoyed seeing.

Thinking it would be a cheque, I didn’t think to ask her name, preoccupied as I was with trying to serve a very long queue for the tombola.

In anticipation she is a regular reader of the Observer, may I thank her for her very generous donation and at the same time apologise for failing to ask her name?

Such gestures really do make giving time and effort to the community all the more rewarding and certainly helped brighten up a particularly cloudy and at times chilly afternoon. Nonetheless we still raised £661.54 towards the summer spectacle, which despite being well down on our usual haul, was still very good given it had been postponed from the previous Sunday when it rained all day non-stop.

Thanks to all who baked, grew, donated, helped, lent equipment and attended.
