Introduce a fee to keep facilities

The council is short of money and needs to make savings, so it has decided to close a number of public toilets, including those in the centre of town.

But hundreds of people use these toilets every day, and many in the town want to keep them open. So is there a solution?

Why not introduce charges? When I was growing up, everyone accepted that you had to ‘spend a penny’ to use a public convenience, and today, rail users pay as much as 50p to use the facilities at major London stations.

So why can’t Hastings council charge for the use of the toilets, rather than closing them?

Nothing in life comes free. Someone has to pay for facilities like public toilets.

What’s wrong with asking those who use them to make a contribution to the running costs?

A simple, coin-operated turnstile at the entrance could be the answer.
