Let down by council ice failure

I AM writing to register my disgust at the inaction of the council after the recent snowfall.

On Saturday, December 19, pavements and roads in Worthing were dangerously icy.

However, the council did not salt or grit the area to make the town safer for pedestrians and drivers on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

As a result of this, I understand that many people fell and sustained injuries, which were serious enough to be treated in hospital.

It is probable that others suffered cuts and bruises.

On the morning of Sunday, December 20, several local residents got together and cleared the ice from the Jacob's Ladder footbridge in West Worthing and some of the nearby streets.

I would like to know why the council did not feel able to do this itself. Was it an attempt to save money?

If that is the case, it has placed an unnecessary burden on the NHS and the council has left itself open to being sued by any of those people who were seriously injured on Saturday.

Potentially, this incident could be more expensive for the council than the money it saved in not gritting the town!
