Re: your report that the ‘shared’ cycle route may be ‘a step closer’ (March 24). Perhaps I could set the record straight.

The county council is doing a health and safety audit of the proposal for a cycle route the length of the park. As of now, safety in the park is being threatened by irresponsible cyclists taking the law into their own hands and cycling - sometimes at high speeds - on the pedestrian paths.

Some seem to expect pedestrians to step aside for them. The situation has been made worse by Hastings Urban Bikes (HUB) telling its members and other cyclists that this is now legal. It is not.

There is another issue, which is Historic England demanding detailed plans of all the signs and coloured surfaces that the proposed route would entail, changing the character and appearance of this historic listed park.

Hastings Borough Council has been told to produce detailed plans of all this. It is important that these plans should be made available on notice boards in the park so that we can all see them. Let’s hope Historic England turn it down and we can keep our park safe.
