Let's not pass the buck

IT'S A real shame when local politicians write letters when they are not in full possession of the facts and purposefully omit relevant details.

I refer to Clive B. Roberts' letter in The Herald, November 19, where he tries to "pass the buck" on the car-parking issue.

The facts are that the then Tory administration let the car parks get in such a poor state of repair in the late 1990s, that the only choice was to find an operator (such as NCP) to invest 4million to restore them to a workable condition.

Now I've read the cabinet papers for that time and the Tories accepted the NCP contract without any objection.

Now, the current Tory leader with some honesty, admitted to me at the end of this October "that the car parks would be falling down now if the 4m hadn't been spent".

Clive B. fails to mention that Tory-controlled West Sussex County Council brought in the current rather contentious parking attendants.

And now the county council wants to increase by up to 50 per cent, the on-street parking charges.

These decisions were all discussed and taken when he was a county councillor and he and his local party failed to object to them.

That is why we are suffering them now!

Some readers may remember my letter a few weeks ago when I mentioned about the lack of maintenance to council property, including the barriers at the town hall car park.

They will be angry to know that the damage to the car, when the barrier crashed down on it three times, is 1,500. That doesn't include the stress caused and other costs.

I firmly believe that council taxpayers deserve to know all the facts.
