LETTER: A27: Option 3 is the least harmful

I'm sure we all recognise there are frequently congestion problems associated with the existing A27 Chichester bypass, but we must be very careful any resulting improvement scheme does not have a serious negative impact on the area.

Chichester is a beautiful and historic city and is surrounded by delightful countryside. This is a real treasure for residents and visitors alike, and we must make sure it stays that way. There is no doubt a northern bypass would be disastrous in this respect, but there are also very serious problems with most of the currently proposed options presented by Highways England for the southern A27 bypass. Option 2 is by far the worst with its proposed four unsightly concrete flyovers, demolition of many buildings and another road bridge across the tranquil Chichester canal.

Option 3 is the least harmful. I think this should be chosen together with provision of improved bus services, community minibuses, and cycle and walking routes, to reduce reliance on local car travel.
